I had high hopes for this book. It’s tagline is “An american odyssey from the inner city to the ivy league.”
My hopes were dashed early on when I realized that the book, though a true story, was a story of hopelessness, save for one boy. He thought the world of himself, but on his way to the ivy league, made no true friends until college, thought he was better than his teachers (to the point of seeming to look down on them), ignored his mother (to the point she got evicted [again] his freshman year of college), etc. I’m still not sure what the point of the book was. Perhaps to tell the tale of one boy who managed to rise above drugs and violence in an inner-city D.C. school? Or perhaps a tale of hope that if he could, anyone can.
In my opinion, not worth a read.
